چکیده

We investigate the origin of Paris' law, which states that the velocity of a crack at subcritical load grows like a power law, da/dt ~ (DeltaK)(m), where DeltaK is the stress-intensity-factor amplitude. Starting from a damage-accumulation function proportional to (Deltasigma)(gamma), Deltasigma being the stress amplitude, we show analytically that the asymptotic exponent m can be expressed as a piecewise-linear function of the exponent gamma, namely, m=6-2gamma for gamma or =gamma(c), reflecting the existence of a critical value gamma(c)=2. We perform numerical simulations to confirm this result for finite sizes. Finally, we introduce bounded disorder in the breaking thresholds and find that below gamma(c) disorder is relevant, i.e., the exponent m is changed, while above gamma(c) disorder is irrelevant.

A new approach to the subcritical cracking of ceramic fibers

A new modeling approach to subcritical crack propagation (i.e. static fatigue) in ceramics is introduced and applied to the case of ceramic fibers. This approach relies on classical fracture mechanics, in which the zone near the crack’s tip is modified by the environment (particularly through oxidation). Chemical reactions and diffusion are introduced naturally, which makes the model highly dep...

Fatigue in disordered media

We obtain the Paris law of fatigue crack propagation in a disordered solid using a fuse network model where the accumulated damage in each resistor increases with time as a power law of the local current amplitude. When a resistor reaches its fatigue threshold, it burns irreversibly. Over time, this drives cracks to grow until the system is fractured in two parts. We study the relation between ...

تعیین سرعت رشد خستگی در اتصالات لوله‌ای به وسیله شبکه‌های عصبی مصنوعی

In order to predict the residual life of offshore platforms and establish efficient schedule for underwater inspection and repair, it is necessary to estimate the fatigue crack growth rate in tubular joints properly. Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics and Stress Intensity Factor are applicable tools for evaluating growth rate of existing fatigue cracks in offshore tubular joints. In the past sev...

An incremental formulation for the prediction of two-dimensional fatigue crack growth with curved paths

This paper presents a new incremental formulation for predicting the curved growth paths of twodimensional fatigue cracks. The displacement and traction boundary integral equations (BIEs) are employed to calculate responses of a linear elastic cracked body. The Paris law and the principle of local symmetry are adopted for defining the growth rate and direction of a fatigue crack, respectively. ...

Incomplete self-similarity and fatigue-crack growth

The Paris power law, which relates fatigue-crack growth rates to the applied stress-intensity range, is an example of a scaling law with the inherent property of incomplete similarity. Previous considerations of dimensions and self-similarity have suggested that the assumed ‘materials constants’ in this law are also a function of specimen size. In this note, the question of the size-dependence ...
